I have not been a young man for much longer than I ever was one so my opinions come from experience and have grown strong. But, I remain open minded and am always interested in other’s opinions, especially when they differ from mine, not to argue but hopefully to learn. So I was anxious to have the occasion to meet recently with a young man who had graduated with the highest honors from a very prestigious private university. He knows I’m conservative as I know he’s liberal so we politely avoided politics for a while but when the occasion presented itself, the conversation went something like this:
“Don’t you want to make America great again?”
“America already is great! Why don’t you like Hillary?”
“She’s just too crooked for me to ever support.”
“Why don’t you like Trump?”
“Trump is a racist!”
“Why do you think that?”
“Because he wants to build a wall!”
“Why is that racist?”
“We’ve had a wall before!”
“Really? What wall?”
“The Berlin wall!”
I was stunned. It took a few seconds before I could finally ask how that was the same and I really don’t remember his awkward attempt at a response.
He has far more book smarts than I do but I guess they didn’t teach much history in his field of study. But he is smart and I’m sure he’ll enjoy a successful career so I have hopes that life lessons along the way will enlighten him a bit to some common-sense conservatism. Not that I have issue with liberals, on the contrary, I have blogged about it at thepriestofpragmatism.com. Check it out, it will surprise you.
In the meantime I’ll continue to pray that those who have been and continue to be misguided will eventually see some light in the darkness.
